Dev’s Journey Home

Writer: Chloe OlsenChloe Olsen

Welcoming our newest SDA/SIL Resident in Hobart!

At Multicap Tasmania, we’re all about creating homes, not just houses, and this week, we had the absolute privilege of welcoming Devarshi (Dev) Deka into his new SDA/SIL home in Hobart.

Originally from India, Dev made the courageous decision to leave his government job and move to Australia to pursue a Master of Professional Accounting at the University of Tasmania. However, just as his journey was beginning, life took an unexpected turn. In November 2023, Dev experienced an incident that resulted in a brain injury, leading to 18 months of hospitalisation.

After a long and challenging road, Dev is finally home. While saying goodbye to the hospital staff was emotional, nothing compares to the joy of settling into his own space, surrounded by familiar comforts, including home-cooked Indian meals, which he has dearly missed!

The past 18 months have been a test of resilience for both Dev and his family, and we’re committed to ensuring his new home is a place of warmth, support, and meaningful engagement. This week, Dev will also meet his potential housemate, and if all goes well, we look forward to welcoming both residents by the end of April.

To mark this milestone, Dev’s transition was celebrated with a morning tea alongside his parents, Nick Shelton (DSW), Harry Ghuman (Team Leader), and Chloe Olsen (Derwent CSC/DSSM).

Speaking of Harry, we’re also excited to officially welcome him as the new Team Leader for our SDA/SIL home in Hobart. With extensive experience in leadership and support, and a shared cultural background with Dev, Harry is a fantastic addition to the team.

Here’s to new beginnings and a bright future ahead for both Dev and Harry at Multicap Tasmania!
