what is the NDIS?

NDIS stands for the National Disability Insurance Scheme. The Scheme has been created to provide more personalised supports for people with a disability and provides greater ability for each participant (the term given to a person who receives NDIS supports) to choose the supports they want, from whom they want, and at times that suit them.

​

Every participant in the NDIS will receive a personalized plan that will detail the types of support they will receive, and the participant is then free to choose them for a NDIS provider of those services. Multicap Tasmania is a trusted provider of disability services across Tasmania for nearly 50 years, and is registered to provide a wide range of support services. We currently provide these across Northern Tasmania, with offices in Burnie, Devonport and Launceston and services across these regions.

The NDIS may fund a number of different support items based on the needs and goals of individual participants. Multicap Tasmania offers workshops where families and people with disabilities can learn more about the Scheme and how it can assist them.

 

Supports generally fall into one of 3 broad groups.

what supports might be available?

It is important that all available supports are understood to ensure each participant receives an NDIS package that meets their needs.  Multicap Tasmania can assist you to understand what might be possible.

Core funding is for supports that provide for everyday necessities, and includes the following categories:

• Assistance with Daily Life

• Transport

• Consumables

• Assistance with Social & Community

Capital funding provides financial support for the purchase and installation of equipment such as Assistive Technology (for that can assist communication), as well as any required home or vehicle modifications, such as installation of hoists.

Capacity building funding provides for supports that can be used to develop new skills, help build independence, or help manage your supports, and includes the following categories:

• Increased Social and Community Participation

• Finding and Keeping a Job

• Improved Relationships

• Improved Health and Wellbeing

• Improved Learning

• Improved Life Choices

• Improved Daily Living Skills

how do I determine if I am eligible?

​

Eligibility to the NDIS is determined by the National Disability Insurance Agency.  An access request commences the  application process, with a decision made by the Agency.

​

In general, a person

• must be under 65 year of age to access the NDIS for the first time (once in the Scheme, eligibility remains even after your 65th birthday)

• must have a permanent disability

 

In some circumstances, funded supports are available under the Early Childhood Early Intervention Service to provide support where Developmental Delays exist.
